Make Edible Fairy Dust

How about some fairy dust to make your world a more magical place? Fairy dust can be used for special effects, and it's also edible! Fairy dust can be made in any color, and if you want it to sparkle, adding edible glitter creates a neat effect. Once you have your mixture ready, sprinkle it around to spread a little magic.

Ingredients

Basic fairy dust:

  • Confectioners sugar
  • Regular sugar
  • 1 drop liquid food coloring

Baked fairy dust:

  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 10 drops liquid food coloring, color of choice

Strawberry fairy dust:

  • 1 pound strawberries
  • Squeeze of lemon juice

Steps

Basic fairy dust

  1. Pour the confectioners sugar into a mixing bowl.
    • Confectioners sugar is also known as icing sugar or powdered sugar. Do not substitute with regular sugar, as you need both.
  2. Mix the confectioners sugar with the regular sugar. This will give it some texture in order for it to look sparkly.
  3. Add one drop of food coloring. This will give the dust a color, so be sure you like it.
    • Use any color you desire.
    • Don't add too much coloring, or it will cause the sugars to clump.
  4. Finished––you have made fairy dust. Dip strawberries in it for a tasty treat.

Baked fairy dust

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF/180ºC. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  2. Add the sugar to a mixing bowl. Pour in 10 drops of food coloring, adding gradually until you are happy with the resulting color. (This might mean you add less or more of the food coloring drops.)
  3. Mix the food coloring through, using a fork. Be sure to mix well enough to cover all of the sugar.
  4. Transfer the colored sugar to the prepared baking sheet. Spread across it evenly, breaking down any clumps with the back of the fork.
  5. Place into the preheated oven. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
  6. Remove from the oven. Again, break down any clumps using the back of the fork. Allow to cool completely.
  7. Finished. The edible fairy dust is now ready for use as a decoration on cakes or cookies, etc., or for other uses. If not using straight away, keep in an airtight container.

Strawberry fairy dust

  1. Preheat the oven to 100ºF/40ºC. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Place the strawberries into the blender or food processor. Add the lemon juice. Blend or process until smooth.
  3. Pour the strawberry and lemon puree over the parchment paper on the baking sheet. Spread evenly using a spatula or butter knife.
  4. Place into the preheated oven. Leave to bake for 3 hours.
  5. Remove from the oven. Pull off the paper and return to the food processor or blender. Quickly process or blend the mixture until it turns into a fine powder.
  6. Done. You now have edible strawberry fairy dust, for eating as it is or sprinkling onto cakes and cookies, etc. for decoration.

Tips

  • Mix the basic fairy dust with brown sugar to make it more colorful.
  • You can add edible glitter to give the fairy dust a magical sheen. Check with the manufacturer's instructions to see whether the product remains edible or only decorative.
  • You may be able to use other berries, such as raspberries or blueberries in place of the strawberries for the third kind of fairy dust. This will change the flavor or the color, so it might be worth experimenting!

Warnings

  • Do not throw edible fairy dust at anyone; it may cause harm to eyes, etc.
  • Do not give edible fairy dust to babies or small children, in case they inhale it rather than eat it properly.
