Make Hairspray Using Citrus Fruits
Some people would rather not treat their hair with chemicals, nor pollute the air in their home with aerosol propellants, but still would like to keep their hair nice and neat. Here are some suggestions to help.
Steps
- Chop a whole orange or lemon into wedges.
- Lemons are less oily, and may result in a less sticky product.
- Oranges are slightly more sticky, but have more "hold", for hard to manage hair.
- Place 2 cups clean water (distilled, or chemical free is best) in a pot.
- Add lemon or orange pieces, using the whole fruit, including peel.
- Bring to boil over medium high heat, and continue until the contents in pot are reduced to about half.
- Strain the contents of the pot through a coffee filter, a cheesecloth, or a piece of cotton fabric like a T-shirt, to remove solids.
- Place the liquid in a pump type sprayer, (you can get these from a hardware store), and spray as you would with a commercial hair product, misting your hair evenly with a light coat.
- Allow the mixture to dry. If it seems sticky after drying, add a little water, and reduce the amount of spray.
- Add 2 ounces rubbing alcohol for a preservative, or keep the product refrigerated for up to two weeks.
- Spray on hair.
Tips
- Strain the mixture thoroughly before putting in the spray bottle.
- Keep from spraying in your eyes or allowing excess overspray to drift to surfaces.
- Using a good shampoo and conditioner that do not over dry your hair will make keeping your hair manageable much easier.
- Shake the product to mix ingredients prior to use.
- There is a direct link between healthy hair and good nutrition, and healthy hair is more manageable.
Warnings
- Although this is a natural product, do not ingest it.
- Watch for allergic reactions. If you are allergic to citrus, do not use this product.
- Be careful with how much lemon you put, even though you're putting water, too much lemon can act as a hair lightener if you have dyed hair.
