Make Hoof Oil
Hoof oil holds a very important place within the horse's grooming routine. It is used to moisturise, as well as to harden the hoof to prevent breakage. Since it is also expensive, why not make your own?
Steps
- Get a jug or deep bowl.
- Measure out 50ml (1.7 fl oz) of vegetable oil and 50ml (1.7 fl oz) of olive oil.
- Mix the ingredients together.
- Pour the completed solution into a hoof oil holder (expensive option) or into a butter tub (the cheap option). Use a funnel to help pour the solution neatly.
- Groom your horse's hooves. Use a hoof oil brush or just get a cheap pastry brush, which is much cheaper.
Tips
- Apply after exercising on sand or rubber as it will stick to it.
- Store in a dark, cool, dry place. Dispose of after 6 months or when it smells rancid. Be sure to label and date the container.
- Apply inside the hoof if on concrete so things don't get stuck to it.
Warnings
- if applying inside the hoof make sure that your horse is standing on an even, hard surface.
