Make Pumpkin Candles

Pumpkin candles can add a spooky glow to your Halloween dinner table. While you'll need a pumpkin-shaped mold and candlewicks, all the other ingredients are available in most stores and kitchens. Beginning reading the below steps to make your own beautiful pumpkin candle.

Steps

  1. Boil one cup of water. Boil one cup of water using either a kettle or microwaving in the microwave.
  2. Break up old candles. Break up approximately four old candles in a small measuring jug. The smaller you break them up, the faster they will melt.
  3. Add the water. Fill a large measuring cup about halfway full with the boiling water.
  4. Make the candle. Place the smaller cup holding the wax into the larger one and allow it to sit there until the wax melts and turns into a liquid. If you have a double boiler, you can use that instead to get faster results.
  5. Add the wick. Prepare your molds by placing a length of wick across each candle mold.
  6. Add orange glitter. Add a bit of orange glitter if you like, for decorative effect.
  7. Fill the mold with the wax. Notice that when the wax has set, its color changes. The whiter and less translucent the wax, the harder it is.
  8. Finished.

Tips

  • You can buy paraffin wax in large blocks (intended for candle making) and orange pigment for candle making at craft stores; this is an alternative to melting down candles.
  • If you use the method of placing a smaller cup into the large one, make sure to keep the water heated so that the wax will remain melted.
  • This method of candle making can be used for almost any molded candle.

Warnings

  • Be careful when handling hot wax; if it spills, it can cause burns on the skin.
  • The coffee grinder will never be good for coffee again.
  • Make sure that you allow any spilled wax to dry completely. Afterwards you can just peel up the wax easily.
  • Do not use measuring cups, coffee grinders or double boilers for wax, and then use them again for food. Once you use them for candle making, only use them for candle making. Label them clearly with a waterproof marker so that you don't make a mistake.
