Make Windows Movie Maker Files Compatible With YouTube

A lot of people use Windows Movie Maker in order to make videos for YouTube. Of course, the raw Windows Movie Maker files (ones with a .MSWMM extension) are not accepted by the YouTube uploader. This technicality can be overcome, however, and this article will show you how to.

Steps

  1. Open your movie project in Windows Movie Maker. You can do this by either...
    • Opening WMM and selecting it through the "Open..." dialog
    • Clicking on the project file in Windows Explorer
  2. Make sure the "Tasks" sidebar is shown. You can do this by looking at the toolbar right below the menu bar. One icon will say "Tasks".
    • If there is a box around the icon, you can move onto the next step.
    • If not, then you must click it.
    • If you did not see an icon, then you can go into the the "View" menu and select "Task Pane" from the resulting menu.
  3. Expand the "Finish Movie" step in the task pane if you have not done so already. This will show you the options for exporting your project.
  4. Click the "Save to my computer" button. It should be right underneath the heading.
  5. Put in a title for your movie, as well as a place to save it. Make sure you know where your movie will be saved, so you don't have to search your computer for it.
  6. On the next screen, there will be three options for export quality:
    • Best quality for playback on my computer (recommended)
    • Best fit to file size:
    • Other settings:
  7. Go with the "Other settings" option. In the drop-down list right next to it, there will be an option that says "High quality video (large)". I would recommend using that export setting, as it will give you high quality video in a format you can upload to YouTube.
  8. Your project will now begin to export. All you need to do is wait for the process to finish.
  9. Upload your movie to YouTube.

Tips

  • Examine the resulting movie file before uploading. Windows Movie Maker is not an exact science, and so the exported file may be of sub-par quality.
