Make Your Own Crunchy Potato Chips

If you are paying too much for that delicious "crunch" in Lay's potato chips, try this instead. It will save you a lot of hard-earned cash in minutes!

Steps

  1. Turn your deep fryer on high. Fill it up about halfway. Add 1 cup of canola oil.
  2. Thin slice your potatoes.
  3. When your mixture starts to boil, add the sliced potatoes. Stir them about every 3 minutes to stop burning. Take out when just about cooked and let the oil come back to very hot again. Add the chips to finish off and crisp up. This last step is essential for crunchy chips.
  4. When they are cooked (depending on how you like them), carefully take them out and put the chips on a plate with a paper towel.
  5. Add some flavor! You can experiment with different spices and salts to make them even better.
  6. Enjoy!

Tips

  • Try using Sunflower oil as it is healthier and all natural.
  • Don't mix cooking oil with water! Someone had posted to mix oil with water for low fat chips. It is extremely dangerous to add water to hot oil.
  • Don't use too much salt.
  • Keep the chips in the sun to dry.
  • Adding a cap full of vinegar will also make them crispy as well as keep them from adding too much oil. Be careful not to pour in too fast or hot liquid will splatter.
  • Try your own blend of seasonings if you wish to flavor your chips yourself.
  • In case you don't own a fryer, you can use your microwave. If you do a Google Search on "make your own potato chips in your microwave" you will find dozens of other recipes.

Warnings

  • Be very cautious around hot oil. It will splatter, so stay away from it. Warn other people about the hot oil.
  • Keep children away from hot objects at all times.
  • Do not eat too many of these chips, they're not healthy for you. (An alternative is to use sunflower oil with natural potatoes and little salt.)

Things You'll Need

  • Shaved potatoes (to do this, peel a potato and then keep peeling the inside like you would to the peel).
  • Canola oil
  • Salt (optional)
