Make Your School's Baseball Team

Your school has a lot of people in it and many are trying out for baseball. You're unsure if you will make it. If you feel you're unsure read on.

Steps

  1. Baseball is a sport where you need to practice daily in order to get good. Planning ahead is essential. Make a weekly schedule which includes conditioning as well as working on skills. Following a regular routine will make it easier.
  2. Use off season time to improve your game. Most schools baseball teams end around June. Objectively evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. Asking your current coaches how you can improve is a good start and will leave a good impression as well. This gives you about 9 months until tryouts in March. Try to get on a fall team in order to keep your skills sharp. Fall is a time to improve your game and work on things for the spring such as throwing a new pitch, bunting, hitting to opposite field, etc. Work with a coach specifically to get better at fielding, hitting, and pitching.
  3. Work on specific parts of your game. For position players: Work on catching fly balls, scooping up grounders and throwing on target about 5 times a week during the warmer months (October, March). During the colder months, (November-February) you should practice about 3 times a week. If you can practice inside. Each exercise should be for about an hour a day.
  4. Condition your arm in time for tryouts. Start early and start slow to avoid having a sore arm or blisters interfering with your tryout.
  5. For pitchers: Control is always more important than velocity. Work on the ball hitting the strike zone first. Then work on velocity. Remember velocity is with mechanics. Also, 60'{{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} is the high school distance, 42' is the little league distance.
  6. Bat speed is essential to making the ball go far. To help increase bat speed workout in the gym during the off-season. Work with a hitting coach or look on the internet for drills to improve your swing. You WILL be surprised at the results.
  7. When tryouts come around be humble about it because there are sure to be some great ballplayers there. In other words don't be too cocky or overconfident. If it's an open tryout, stretch and run on your own. Find someone else to throw with. Take it serious and follow the coach's instruction fully.
  8. Get on the coach's good side. A coach looks for more than just skill. Have good sportsmanship, good grades, and present yourself as a good kid. This can give you the edge over another player. Don't play around during practice or act like a goof. Be serious and try to improve every day.
  9. Remember tryouts are not the same as practice or a game. You want to showcase your strengths and make a good impression. Baseball is a tough sport in which failure is an integral part. Batting averages are a prime example. It is important to be confident yet polite. Keep your head up, look your coach in the eye, don't look down or at your feet when you do make that inevitable error.

Tips

  • Eating healthy--lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and a minimum of processed carbohydrates and sugar--will make a difference over time. The appropriate intake for your activity level is also important. This may mean eating as many as 5 small meals a day.
  • If weight conditioning, eat some protein within 30 minutes of finishing your workout to receive the optimum benefit.
  • Know what you need to do to perform your best at tryouts. If this means going to bed at 8:30 PM that week or hitting off a tee or throwing into a net to make sure your swing is grooved or arm is warm then find a way to do it.
  • There are other useful exercise routines that can be easily found using the Internet.

Warnings

  • If you've had a long season or an injury it is important to take some time to recover. Repetitive motion injuries are common among serious athletes. Cross training in a related sport like track for a little while will let you give your arm a rest.
  • Consult your doctor before playing baseball. High School programs usually require a physical signed off by a doctor so have one scheduled.
