Make a 3D Archery Target

Make your own 3D archery target that is relatively less expensive than buying one. It should take about 1/2 hr or less to make. Get started at step one below.

Steps

  1. Get an old or new foam turkey decoy, and some expanding spray foam sealant.
  2. Spray a thin layer of foam from into the turkey, from head to tail.
  3. Let it dry for 24 hours.
  4. Spray another thin layer.
  5. Keep doing this until it is completely full. Don't rush.
  6. Make a 2x4 stand. You will need 4-2x4's {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long and 2- 2 1/2 feet long.
  7. Bolt, nail, or screw the 2' long boards at a 90 degree angle in the center, making 2 t's.
  8. Attach the longer boards at the top and bottom.
  9. Hang your target from rope on the stand. Use 2 ropes for a stationary target, and 1 rope for a moving target.

Tips

  • Do not spray very much foam in at one time, as you will ruin the project. Thin layers and lots of drying time are needed; if it is not dry, your arrows will become a sticky mess when you shoot them.
  • After you shoot the target a bunch, you can repair it with more spray foam.
  • Always make sure to know bow poundage so you will know how many layers for your specific bow.
  • Before you use your can of spray foam, find something to securely plug the hose or it will dry up. Some cans have a place to plug the hose on them.

Warnings

  • Have a backstop in place; turkeys are hard to hit.
