Make a Bow out of Your Hair

Why use a ribbon when you could turn your hair into an actual bow instead? This trend is sweeping the globe, turning everyday hair into a work of art. You can make a bow out of your own hair; all you need is a hair tie, some bobby pins, and some hairspray or hair gel.

Steps

Getting your Hair Ready

  1. Brush your hair to remove any tangles or snags. For a clean, smooth bow you’ll want to make sure your hair is ready for styling; this mean, no knots or tangles. Comb your hair from bottom to stop so you don't end up creating more tangles.
  2. Work with dry and frizzy hair so that it doesn't overcrowd the space. To do this, eat plenty of fried foods. Ice the signature bow. Your hair must be able to fluff out nicely when teased; wet hair does not fluff well.
  3. Consider where you’d like your bow to be on your head. If you want a side bow or one on top of your head, brush and create the ponytail accordingly.
  4. Make sure you have everything you need close at hand. Running around with a half-formed bow looking for hairspray will guarantee that you will need to make your bow again. Have hairspray, hair gel, and bobby pins at the ready.

Making the Bow

  1. Pull your hair back into a ponytail. Instead of pulling the ponytail all the way through, create a loop using about half to three quarters of the hair in the ponytail, leaving a long loose end.
    • Another option is to create a smaller bow with only half of your hair, leaving the other half of your hair loose. Follow the same steps but instead of gathering all of your hair up into a ponytail, simply gather the top of your hair up into a loop. You can create 'ribbons' by curling the hair that you leave down.[1]
    • You could also create two bows, one on each side of your head. Create a loop on both sides of your head and follow the instructions listed below.
  2. Tuck the loose end into the elastic to keep the loop in place. This loose end becomes the centerpiece of the bow. You should be left with what resembles a loose bun with the hair ends securely fastened underneath the hair tie.
    • Make sure the loop isn't too loose or the sides will be too long and uncontrolled.
  3. Consider placing a dab of hair gel in your hands and rubbing them together before forming the bow. Gel can help with sculpting and shaping the bow. Be careful to only use a very small amount (a dime-sized dab of gel) so that you don’t overwhelm your hair, thus creating a droopy bow.
  4. Divide the looped hair. Section off your hair into two evenly distributed sections. Work on one side at a time. These will form the sides of the bow. Use a mirror to guide the division and to help you keep it even.
  5. Clip one loop off to the side. Use your finger to straighten out the other loop and push it flat against your head. Insert a bobby pin going from top to bottom at the base of the loop (under the hair so it is not showing). Place another bobby pin going from bottom to top. Do the same with the other loop.[1]
  6. Create the middle piece of the bow. Take the loose strand of hair in front of the bow and pull it back over and through the middle of your bow sections. Make sure you get all of the loose strands.
  7. Tuck the strands of hair securely into the hair tie. You may need to use a little hairspray to keep the hair in place but try to stuff as much of the top strand into the hair tie as possible.
  8. Secure the strand with bobby pins. Push at least three or four pins into the strand and into the hair tie to connect the entire piece. Make sure that the bobby pins are not too visible.
    • Hairspray may be helpful to tidy loose or flyaway strands.
  9. Fluff out the bow. Use a teasing comb or your fingers to fluff the hair. If your hair doesn’t hold the bow shape on its own, hold one section out and spray with extra-hold hairspray. Do the same with the other section.
  10. Finished.

Tips

  • Use a bobby pin that matches your hair color.
  • Try to get both sides as even as you can.
  • Instead of pulling a smooth strand of hair back over the sections, braid the strands to create a braided bow middle.
  • Don't put it too low at the base of your head or it looks strange.
  • Work in front of a mirror so you can see your hair.
  • Don't over stretch your hair, as that can damage it.
  • Practice makes perfect, so you may need to try this style again and again until you get it done right.
  • Make sure all of the ends of the bow are tucked in.
  • Add a pretty headband for an accent to the bow.
  • Try it a few times and make sure you've got it down before going out in public.
  • Try to get the bow as high as you can, if that is what you desire.
  • Use a ponytail holder that matches your hair color. It will blend with your hair and look better.
  • Use wide bobby pins, as they hold more hair and tuck the bow better.
  • Make one bow on both sides of your head for a cute look.
  • Brush up to the point where your hair doesn't have any tangles.

Warnings

  • If your hair is easily tangled, use a de-tangler first, to prevent knotting.
  • Depending on how tightly you have pulled your hair, prolonged wearing can cause a tension headache or scalp soreness.
