Steps
- For the flag, we will need a 3 x 5 foot length of cotton or nylon cloth.
- Make sure the edges of the cloth are straight by hemming it or melting the edges using a candle flame to ensure the threads are always intact and prevent fraying.
- For the pole, get a standard wooden or an aluminum pole sold for broomsticks.
- Create a long pocket in the cloth to stuck the pole into. To measure the pocket, place the pole at the edge of the cloth. Fold the cloth to cover the pole with an inch of excess for sewing. It is not really necessary to make the pocket tight, but it does have to be large enough to fit the pole.
- Sew the excess cloth together to create the pocket. If you are using a glue instead of a needle and thread, make sure the glue is strong enough to hold.
- Sew the top part of the pocket to close the opening and finish the pole pocket.
- Sew (or super glue) a simple ribbon or rope beside the opening of the pocket. this string will be tied to the pole to ensure the flag is attached to the pole and doesn't get blown away. Test your flag by slipping the pole into the pocket to ensure that it fits perfectly
- Paint your flag. It is best to have waterproof paint. To get a full range of colors, get black, white, red, yellow and blue and do some mixing with these colors.
- Paint your flag as desired. It is best to sketch the design first.
- Paint the other side of the flag using the same design flipped horizontally. Use the painted side to guide the 2nd painting
- Let the paint dry, attach it to the pole, and give it a wave through the windy air with pride!
Tips
- Paint mixing -Yellow+Blue=Green, Yellow+Red=Orange, Red+Blue=Purple, Yellow+Red+Blue=Brown, Use black to darken and white to lighten. Be creative!
Warnings
- Be careful when handling with candles as it may get overdone and ruin the edges of your flag.
