Make a Good Amateur Movie

You may not be a Hollywood movie maker, but you can still make quality short films. With this guide you can make a well-made short film yourself.

Steps

  1. Use a good quality camera (3ccd mini dv, or better). Get better sound quality by using a camera that has a connection for an external microphone. Use external microphone(s) where possible since built-in mics can't be placed independently and are prone to noise.
  2. Use a tripod to reduce image shaking.
  3. When first thinking of a project, choose the genre of movie it will be: action, horror, sci-fi, comedy, documentary, historical fiction, etc.
  4. Think of a story for the project. Don't be afraid of originality, but keep in mind any constraints. For example, if special effects will be needed, how can this be achieved with your budget if you cannot create them yourself? Don't start thinking wholly about budget either, as it might stifle your creativity. If an idea won't possibly work at the moment, save it for later.
  5. Write the film in the form of a clear, easy-to-read script, and let your actors contribute too. Look at other film scripts to get an idea of how to construct your own.
  6. Cast the film. Get to know your actors, and get them to cover the role of their character. Use friends, or possibly audition some drama students. Good acting is important in any film, so avoid using anyone you feel is unsuitable.
  7. Have the actors dress rehearse several times to get into character. This is also a good opportunity to sort out "blocking" (an actor that's out of position).
  8. When shooting begins, film the more difficult scenes first, and get them out of the way.
  9. After shooting is finished, take the raw footage to a video editor or edit it yourself on your home computer
  10. Watch your movie and make sure everything is how you like it. If not change it.
  11. Burn the completed film to a DVD, and share with friends.
  12. Sell your movie or make copies to give to friends.

Tips

  • If multiple scenes take place in the same place, film all those scenes while you're in that area unless you need different lighting in a scene.
  • Don't think a normal camera is waterproof. If filming in the rain have a plastic bag covering the camera, except over the lens.
  • Some iPod touch/ iPhone apps such as Action Movie FX can be a good way to use quality effects for a small amount of money.
  • If you don't have a clapboard, write the name or number of the scene and the right scenes. If necessary, use a sound effects CD.
  • If the film is a comedy, it'd be a plus to keep outtakes and include them in an outtake/blooper reel after the film.
  • Remember to be unique, you wouldn't want to be charged for copyright.

Warnings

  • When using music or sound effects, make sure your music is not copyrighted. If possible, record the music yourself.
