Make a Good Turkey Burger

Turkey burgers are a healthy alternative to traditional beef burgers, because they are lower in fat and cholesterol. Turkey burgers need a little extra moisture during cooking to keep them from drying out and can be flavored in a variety of ways. Here are some tips on how to make a good turkey burger.

  1. Mix light and dark meat.
    • Dark turkey meat from the thigh and leg is moister than breast meat and has more flavor. Choose a combination of both to add moisture and flavor when making turkey burgers.
    • Look for packages labeled "ground turkey meat," which is usually about 90 percent white meat and 10 percent dark. Packages labeled "ground turkey breast" contain only white meat and will be lower in fat, but could dry out faster during cooking.

  • Turkey burgers must be cooked all the way through, unlike beef burgers that are safe to eat when the meat is rare. Use a meat thermometer to ensure that your turkey burgers have reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius).
