Make a Google Doc Public

Google Drive makes sharing your documents and files easy. You can make a file public so that anyone can access the file with the link. You can give this link to whomever you'd like, or your file can be found by anyone searching for it. Sharing your file only takes a few clicks.

Steps

Using a Web Browser

  1. Log into Google Drive. Make sure you log in with the account that is storing the file you want to share. Visit drive.google.com in your preferred browser and log in with your Google account.
  2. Right-click on the file you want to share. Navigate to the file you want to share and right-click on it.
  3. Select "Share...". This will open the sharing permissions window.
    • Alternatively, you can open the file and then click the "Share" button.
  4. Click the "Change..." link. This is located in the "Who has access" section.
  5. Select "Public on the web". This will make the file completely public, and anyone can find it by searching for it or entering the link.
    • You can also select "Anyone with the link". This will make the item public as well, but the link will be needed to access the file.
  6. Set access rights. In the "Access" drop-down menu that appears, you can set the editing permissions for people who view your file. By default, they can only view it. If you want anyone to be able to edit the document, select "Can edit" from the menu.
    • If you only want viewers to be able to leave comments, select "Can comment".
  7. Click "Save". This will save the permissions settings for the file.
  8. Invite people to the document. Add email addresses into the field at the bottom of the Sharing settings window. This will send email messages to the people you list, inviting them to view the document.
  9. Give out the link. Once your document is set to be public, you can start giving your link out. Copy the link in the "Link to share" box, and distribute it to whoever needs to see it. You can paste the link in an email, post it to your social media page or forum, or paste it in a chat.

Using the Google Drive App

  1. Log into the Google Drive app. You can download the app for free from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Tap the "ⓘ" (Information) button next to the file you want to share. This will open the details for that file.
  3. Tap the "Link sharing is OFF" option. This is located in the "Who has access" section. Tapping this will make the file public so that anyone with the link can access it.
  4. Set access rights. Tap "Link sharing is ON". This will open the access menu. By default, people with the link will only be able to view. If you want them to be able to edit the document, select "Can edit" from the menu.
    • If you only want viewers to be able to leave comments, select "Can comment".
  5. Send out the link. Tap "Share link" at the top of the information page. You can copy the link to your device's clipboard, or you can share it with any of your installed messaging, email, or social media apps.

Warnings

  • Once a Google Drive file is placed public on the internet, you may never be able to effectively make the information on it private again.  Search engines, archive bots, or other users may store that data and republish it elsewhere. Choose wisely.
