Make a Hamster Hammock
A hamster hammock can be a comfortable place for your hamster to chill out. Here is how to make one.
Steps
- Find or make a washcloth for the hammock. You can also use fleece if needed, and gather the supplies needed stated below.
- Turn on the sewing machine. Be ready with the color thread you've chosen for the project. Have ready the Stuff a Leather Pouffe to fill the hammock with.
- Fold the washcloth in half.
- Sew the washcloth into a hammock. Sew all three sides and leave one side open for the filling.
- Stuff the hammock with the filling. Sew up the last edge to complete the hammock.
- Sew twine at each end of the hammock. These twine ends will serve as the ties for the hammock, to be attached to the hamster's cage. Tidy any loose ends and it's done.
- Attach your hamster's hammock to the cage. Wait for him to start chilling!
Tips
- Being of an inquisitive nature, hamsters will investigate anything you add to their cage, so your hamster's interest should be fairly fast. However, don't be surprised if your hamster isn't sure how to use it; he may make up his own mind about what he'll do with it!
- You may wish you replace the strings with lightweight chains so your hamster doesn't gnaw through them. These can then be attached with clips to both the hammock and the cage, making removal and cleaning of the hammock much easier.
Warnings
- If your hamster shreds either the string or the hammock, remove it immediately to avoid possible problems with tripping or trying to eat it.
- Be sure to tie the hammock on firmly. It's likely that your hamster will try to climb on the rope or twine parts of the hammock as well as on the facecloth portion.
