Make a Homemade "Piggy" Bank

Every time your friends invite you to hit the mall, you can't resist bringing along that extra $10 or $15, and when you come back home, you realize you just spent yourself out in more ways than one. So what to do about this problem - which in this day and age (not to mention economy) isn't exactly the best? Make a "piggy bank"!

Steps

  1. Find a box that is at largest 9 in. by 9 in. or a sterile and empty container with a lid (Ziploc containers work excellently if you don't want to decorate them). It is not recommended that you use the large box that your brand new plasma screen TV came in.
  2. Cut a slit in the very middle of the box/container lid. If that isn't possible, get really close to the middle. Remember that if you want to be precise and accurate, "Measure twice before cutting". If you want to wait after decorating, be my guest but be reminded that you must make sure that the slit won't cut into a decoration you don't want it to cut into.
  3. Decorating comes in now. Be creative! If you have wallpaper, wrapping paper, or construction paper that you want to wrap around your box/container, do it. Make sure that if you are going to wrap your container that you wrap the lid and container separately. IF YOU ARE CUTTING A SLIT IN THE DECORATING PAPER NOW, MAKE SURE THAT THE SLIT IN THE BOX AND PAPER ARE ALIGNED BEFORE TAPING/GLUING. After that, you are free to decorate as you please. No instructions regarding decorations, but if you are using glue then I recommend that you wait for the glue to dry before adding on - it takes an hour at most. Remember not to put decorations in a place where you'll put the slit if you haven't done so yet.
  4. Now that you have a decorated box with a slit, you are done. If you don't have a slit, cut one now. Make sure not to use a dull edge to cut because it will make the cut ragged and unappealing. You don't want a "piggy bank" that looks like that, right?
  5. You're done! Believe it or not, if daily you put your spare change in this "piggy bank", you will earn more money than you think! So go on! Add some coins in there and remember that dollar bills can fit in there. If not, lengthen/widen the slit accordingly.
  6. Finished.

Tips

  • A "piggy bank" doesn't necessarily have to look like a piggy. It can look like a frog, duck, rabbit...your creativity is your only limit!!!
  • You can make the bank more colorful by adding pieces of colored paper that were cut into small pieces.
  • If you are using a container, WRAP THE CONTAINER ITSELF AND THE LID SEPARATELY. DON'T CUT A SLIT IN THE CONTAINER ITSELF.
  • Have fun while doing this because - well, what's the point in doing a craft you'll dislike?
  • Not only the US dollar can be put in a "piggy bank." If you use euros, yen, or other currencies, just adjust the slit.
  • Remember that if you don't want to make a decorated "piggy bank", you can just add coins in the box/container with the slit in it or use an empty jar.
  • This works great with little kids, but make sure the child's supervised by a parent/guardian.

Warnings

  • Scissors should be used with caution. Knives - use even more caution. Parent supervision required for children.
  • Making a mistake in the position of the slit is okay - remember that a true artist can make mistakes seem like they weren't mistakes at all.
