Make a Kid's Bow and Arrow

Do your kids want a bow and arrow but you aren't sure if they are ready for one? Here is your answer. These easy to follow instructions allow you to easily make a safe bow and arrow for your child.

Steps

  1. Get a staff for your bow. Yew Oak and Ash are good choices but any wood other than pine should work. If you want to you could just grab a stick from a local woods.
  2. Shave off all of the bark with a pocket knife.
  3. Pick a bowstring for your bow. Twine works well but mason line is the best.
  4. Using a rat tail file, file notches an inch from either end of the bow staff and cut your string to length. It should be slightly shorter than your unbent bow staff.
  5. Tie your string to both ends of your bow.
  6. Now for your arrows you should use small sticks of bamboo.
  7. Cut off most of a stick coming off of it with a penknife then file it until it is perfectly round.
  8. If the arrow if bent then you can soak it in water for 24 hours then hold it straight in a vice for 24 hours.
  9. Use a penknife to split the arrow down the middle and stick a feather in it.
  10. Once the feather is in, secure it by wrapping thread around either side of the feather and securing the thread in place with glue.
  11. If you need to you can use a saw to cut a small notch in the end of the arrow to hold it on the string.
  12. For arrowheads you can glue eraser caps onto the end of the arrow. They are aerodynamic but not very dangerous.
  13. Finished.

Tips

  • You may want to make five or six arrows as you may lose or break some of them.
