Make a Moisturizing Deep Treatment for Hair

Does your hair ever feel very dry? If your regular conditioner isn't working to replenish your moisture, you probably need to add moisture back in with a deep treatment. One way to go about this is to make your own. The following recipes emphasize moisture over protein.

Ingredients

Recipe 1

  • 1 can of coconut milk
  • 1 banana
  • 1 avocado
  • 2 tbsp of honey
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Recipe 2

  • 1 over-ripe banana
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 1/2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup coffee
  • Conditioner

Recipe 3

  • 1/2 C conditioner
  • 1/3 C aloe vera gel
  • 2 T melted coconut oil
  • 2 T agave nectar

Steps

  1. Mix up the ingredients in your blender. Make sure the mixture is very smooth, or it will get stuck in your hair.
    • If you're working with any fruits (banana or avocado), lots of honey, and other natural ingredients, it's better if they're well blended. Cut up fruits like bananas so they blend well.
    • If the mixture is too thick, you can always add more conditioner.
  2. Wet your hair. Moisture will penetrate your hair better, and you hair will retain more water, when it's wet. You can also wash your hair if you like, but you may need to rewash after the treatment.
  3. Smooth the mixture all over your hair. Combing it out is good if your hair is not tangled, but if it is, leave it be. You may want to section your hair so that you ensure that the treatment reaches everywhere.
  4. Cover your hair with plastic wrap or a disposable shower cap.
  5. Add heat. You can use a heated shower cap, use your blow-dryer to heat up your hair or warm up a towel in the dryer. Just make sure to heat up your hair--this also helps the moisture penetrate the hair shaft better.
  6. Insulate the hair. This will help retain the heat.
  7. Leave the treatment in for 30 minutes to an hour. The longer the better. You can also leave it in overnight.
  8. Rinse out the treatment. Shampoo and condition your hair. Don't use a clarifying shampoo, as this may strip too much of the moisture that you have just added to your hair. Make sure to brush thoroughly to remove any particles left behind.
  9. Style as usual and enjoy your moisturized hair. It should be soft and refreshed.

Tips

  • You don't need to follow the recipes above. You can just use what you have around the house.

Warnings

  • If you hair is frizzy, soft, and stretchy, do not use a moisturizing treatment. If your hair feels moisturized but is acting dry, your hair is over conditioned. You need to clarify your hair and do a protein treatment instead.

Things You'll Need

  • Knife and cutting board for making smaller pieces of fruit for blending
