Make a New File in Windows

There are many ways to create a file on your computer. Microsoft Windows since Windows 95 has offered a way to create a blank file, without having to open any separate application, by using the context menu of Windows Explorer.

Steps

  1. Navigate to the folder or desktop, you would like to create your file. For example, My Documents.
  2. Right click an empty section of the folder window or desktop.
  3. Select "New" from the context menu.
  4. Select the type of file you'd like to create.
  5. Enter a name for the newly created file.
    • Open the new file to edit it.
