Make a New Folder in Windows

A folder is a space on a storage medium that allows files to be placed in it. Folders can help to keep your computer organized by grouping your files together.[1] This article will show you how to create a folder on your Windows computer.

Steps

  1. Open File Explorer. File Explorer is an application built in to Windows that allows you to manage all of the files and folders on your computer and devices connected to it.
  2. Navigate to the location where you want to create your folder. Use the left navigation pane to go to where you want.
  3. Right-click or press down (for touchscreens) on a blank spot. Hover over or tap New and then Folder on the submenu.
    • Newer versions of Windows might have a ribbon at the top of Explorer. If that is the case with your device, you can simply click New folder.
  4. Name the folder by typing. You cannot use the following characters in the name:[2]
    • ~
    •  %
    • &
    • {}
    • \
    •  :
    • +
    • |
    • "
  5. Click somewhere else to save your changes.
  6. Fill the folder. After this you can drag any type of file that you want to organize into your brand new folder. You can then double click the folder at any time to access those files.
    • You can also place another folder into your folder.
