Make a New Nickname Stick

A nickname can be a big part of a person, but it can be rather difficult to change or start a nickname, so try out these steps.

Steps

  1. Literally, begin close to home. If you have siblings, start with them. Tell them to call you whatever your nickname is, and ask if they would like to be called something specific. If they have one already, this is not applicable.
  2. If you have a neighbor you don't know and you see them outside, strike up a conversation. When introductions come up, use your nick name. New people are great ways to get in a new nickname.
  3. Start to tell your friends about it. Don't force it, but ask them to call you by your nickname. Assign nicknames amongst the group, but don't upset anyone or they may refuse to use yours.
  4. Sign papers, letters and such with your nick name. Maybe even get something that says it, an embroidered hat or silk screened shirt.
  5. Never let the nickname slip, and only respond to others when needed. Don't get upset with anyone, but always correct them if they mess up. It's a slow process, so please be patient.

Tips

  • Always use your nickname when introducing yourself. If people hear you being called by your nickname, they will follow suit.

Warnings

  • Never force the nickname; it can do anything from attract laughs or hurt relationships.
