Make a Simple Bow String

Making a bow string is quite simple. There are many different ways and materials you can use to do this.

Steps

  1. Cut off around 3 times the length you will need to make it from nock to nock, IE. {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} bow use {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} of string. Take your string and fold it over itself 3 times. Tie a loop into the ends (make sure to make the string short enough that it will not reach the ends of the bow unless you bend it to get it on your bow.) When this is complete put the string on your bow or tie to something that will keep it stretch out fully without holding it yourself. You will need both hands.
  2. You should rub it down with paraffin now to help the string resist moisture/rot.
  3. Take your thread and weave it through the strings a few times to help hold in place. Then start to wrap around the string; make sure to keep it even and tightly wound. This will make your string last longer and more stable. Be sure to wind the thread around the entire length of your string. This process essentially makes your 3 strings into 1 & reduces vibration.
  4. Take your string and rub it with the paraffin wax again.

Tips

  • This process works, be creative, you can use so many different types of materials to make a string.

Warnings

  • Always use common sense and make sure what is beyond your target. You never know whose kid or pet or car or house or just about anything might be behind what you intend to shoot. Look before you leap!
  • It seems to do fine but with any bow there is always a chance the string might break and injure you or someone else.
  • Never point your bow in the direction of anything you do not intend to kill! Bows are lethal weapons and should be treated as such at all times.

Things You'll Need

  • Good nylon string
  • Thread, the type used for sewing
  • Paraffin wax (candle wax) or bee's wax.
