Make a Snowman out of a Toilet Paper Roll
This is a fun and easy way to recycle, and also create a fun holiday decoration for you or your kids!
Steps
- Find a toilet paper roll. If there is any paper still sticking to it, carefully tear it off. You should have a bare toilet paper roll now.
- Grab a handful or two of cotton balls and paste. Put a small glue dot, and then place one cotton ball on it. Cover your entire toilet paper roll. Let the glue dry completely before you begin the next step.
- Take the middle and bottom section (if we divided the roll into thirds) and put another layer of the cotton balls. This part is a bit tricky! Let the glue dry completely before you begin the next step.
- Take the bottom section (if we divided the roll into thirds) and put a third layer of cotton balls. This is quite tricky, so you need to be careful! Let the glue dry completely before you begin the next step.
- Use black construction paper, and cut out a rectangle that is about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} by {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}. Then, cut out a skinny rectangle that is {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} by {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}.
- Take the skinny rectangle, and put the long edge of the skinny rectangle against the short edge of the fat rectangle. Center the skinny rectangle so you have {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} sticking out from either side of the fat rectangle. Glue the skinny rectangle to the fat rectangle in this shape. It should look like a top hat. Let the glue dry before you begin the next step.
- Use orange construction paper, and cut a {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} by {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} rectangle. Glue it on the fat rectangle so it fits above (not on top of) the skinny rectangle on the hat. Let the glue dry before you begin the next step.
- Put a small line of glue along the edge of the fat rectangle (the back of where you put the skinny rectangle) and place it on the top section of your snowman. It can go on the cotton balls. Let the glue dry before you begin the next step.
- Take two googly-eyes, and put a small dot of glue on the back of each. Place them a little under the top hat. These are the eyes. If you do not have googly eyes, small black construction paper circles will work. Let the glue dry before you begin the next step.
- With the orange construction paper, cut a long, skinny triangle in the shape of a carrot. Make it about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long and {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} wide. Put a small line of glue on the back of the triangle, and place it on the cotton balls, the short end centered beneath the eyes, and the point going horizontally. Let the glue dry before you begin the next step.
- Cut seven (7) tiny black circles with black construction paper. Make them the same size as the googly-eyes. Place them in a semi-circle beneath the nose for a smiley face! Let the glue dry before you being the next step.
- If you would like to add arms, take brown construction paper and cut out two (2) skinny, jagged pieces with three fingers. The arms should be no more than {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long.
- Fold a bit over from the arm part to form a 90 degree angle, or a right angle. Stick a small dot of glue to the back of it, and the connect the arm to the side of the middle part of the body. Do the same for the other arm. Let the glue dry completely before beginning the next step.
- To add buttons, cut three (3) tiny black circles with black construction paper the same size as the googly-eyes. Put a small dot of glue on each of them, and put them in a vertical row on the middle part of the body, centered between the eyes. Let the glue dry completely before beginning the next step.
- To make your snowman an ornament, take ribbon or yarn and tape or glue it to the inside of the toilet paper roll at the top part. Put on end on one side, and put the other end across from the first end. The ribbon should be about six (6) inches long.
- Place your snowman anywhere!
Tips
- Be as creative as you want with this. Adding arms, jacket buttons, and an ornament string are optional steps, and you may want to add more! Use glitter if you want to make a glittery hat, or use different colored construction paper to make it more personalized!
- Layering the cotton balls is quite tricky, but with patience it will work. Don't use too much glue, though, because then the cotton ball will fall off.
Warnings
- ALWAYS be careful with scissors! Have an adult help you or supervise your cutting!
- Don't use too much glue because it will give you soggy cotton balls and paper! Glue stains will show when the paper is dried, plus it takes a much longer time to dry!
- Let the glue dry completely before you complete the next steps! If the glue is still wet and you try to do something else, there is always a chance you will accidentally hit something and knock it off or out of its place.
