Make a Substitute for Fabric Softener
An eco-friendly and budget conscious fabric softener that will leave your clothes delightfully soft.
Steps
- To soften your clothing, you can use things you probably have lying around the house: bicarbonate of soda, baking soda, or vinegar. Either will do the job fine if you have both; just make a choice. Be careful not to use both in the same rinse, though!
- Add your choice of substitute to the final rinse cycle of your wash. Use either:
- 1/2 cup vinegar (white or apple cider)
- 1/4 cup bicarbonate soda/baking soda
- Rinse as normal.
- Dry clothes as normal. Try to prefer drying on a clothesline over using energy-sucking clothes dryers. You can throw the clothes in a regular dryer for 3-5 minutes to make them softer after line-drying.
Tips
- If desired, you can add a few drops of lavender or other essential oil to the final wash to scent the clothing.
- Save a used plastic bottle to fill with vinegar and your essential oils of choice; store this in your laundry area to use as fabric softener!
- Vinegar also gives your washing machine a good clean-out. Put a cup of vinegar through a wash with no clothing to clean out a washing machine and reduce any mildew odors.
Warnings
- Don't mix baking soda and vinegar in the same rinse cycle! ... Remember those volcanoes you made as a kid?
