Make a Sudoku Puzzle Using a Simple Pattern

Once you learn how to solve a sudoku, you might want to start making them yourself. But, that's a whole other challenge. This article will show you a simple method for getting started.

Steps

  1. Make a blank sudoku grid like so:
  2. Start in the large square with the first individual square within it. Start with 1, then jump to the next square to the right and with the same placement and write 2. Do this for 3-9 going left to right.
  3. Repeat the pattern in the opposite corners, as shown. This time, however, you will start with 2. When you get to 9, the next (last) number is 1.
  4. Place a 3 just below the 1. Place a 4 just below the 2. Continue that pattern. Fill in the rest of the boxes in this way, but you can play more with the positions. Treat it like you were solving a sudoku puzzle and make sure not to cross your numbers, or make errors (as can be seen in the completed diagram. The bottom left square contains two 8s. The 8 in the centre left position should be a 9.)
  5. Finished.

Tips

  • You do not have to start with the number one or really even have to start with the same spot, just make sure you start, though, in the first square.
  • This can also be done by doing the first row as: 1-9, second row 4-9+1-3 third row 7-9+1-6 and so on, removing any number you want but keeping the pattern. For the second set of rows start with 2 and for the third start with 3. To make things a little harder to figure out, you can alternate the number you start on as long as you keep in line with the pattern.
