Make a Vermicompost

We can be friends of plants by supplying them with compost.Let us find out how to make compost using red worms.

Steps

  1. Take a small wooden box or dig a small pit.
  2. Spread a net on your box.
  3. Also spread {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} thick layer of sand.
  4. Put some kitchen wastes such as peels of fruits etc to cover the sand.
  5. Use green leaves to cover over the sand.
  6. Sprinkle some water to make this layer wet.
  7. Buy some red worms and put them in your pit.
  8. Give them vegetable and fruit wastes as food.
  9. After 3 to 4 weeks you will see loose, soil like material in the pit.
  10. Remove the material from the box, dry it in the sun.
  11. Use this as a soil supplement and mulch to increase soil fertility and retain moisture.



Tips

  • Cover the box with an old sheet of cloth or a layer of grass clippings.
  • Once in a few days mix the the top layer of the soil
  • If you take care of them, the number of worms will double in a month.

Warnings

  • Make sure they always stay moist.
  • Red worms do not survive in hot or cold conditions.
  • Don't use wastes that contain salt, pickles, oil, vinegar, meat, fat or milk products as food for your worms. These may harm the worms, attract pests or breed disease.
