Motivate Employees Without Spending Any Money

When production is down, so are the company's numbers. Use these steps to motivate employees without spending any money to kick them into gear.

Steps

  1. Offer a half day or full day of vacation as incentive.
    • Create some friendly competition in the office by allowing the person with the best performance or the first to finish a task, to your satisfaction, to cash in on an extra day of vacation time. Employees are likely to work extra hard for the chance to have a little extra free time.
  2. Allow the first to complete his or her work to have first pick of the next set of projects.
    • Employees are often motivated by the work they want to complete. Giving them the option to choose which project they want to work on next, if they finish ahead of the pack, may give them the extra boost they need to get moving. The first to finish could get first pick, the next to finish would get to choose second and so on. The power to choose their work, too, rather then being assigned their next project, may also add to the motivation to get some good work done.
  3. Take turns doing office chores.
    • Employees can get in a rut if they feel like they have to do the same menial tasks over and over again. Make a schedule of who completes which chores around the office and when. Along the way, maybe include incentives to be removed from the rotation if they perform up to a certain level, or by a certain date.
  4. Provide the opportunity to rotate into the more preferable job roles.
    • Always keep the opportunity for advancement open so that employees stay motivated. Make it clear that you are continuously monitoring their progress and those that are doing the best will be offered promotions first. Keeping it widely known around the office that advancement opportunities are available will continue to motivate employees to produce.
  5. Reward with increased company discounts.
    • If the typical company discount is 10%, offer 20% for the highest performer each month. This will be especially motivating if you work for a company that has products the employees are interested in.
    • Offering free products as they come available to high performing employees can also increase workplace motivation. Maybe the highest performer for any given month can have his or her choice of one free product or be the first to try the newest product on the shelves before the rest of the company. Again, some of this will rest on the type of business your company is in.
