Multiply Using Vedic Math

Did you know that there was an alternative way of solving two digit multiplication, called vedic math? Vedic math is an ancient style of multiplying numbers that originated in India. It was used to do some of the mathematical calculations more quickly than normal. In this article, you'll learn how to multiply two digit numbers in the "vertically and horizontally" style in vedic math.

Steps

Multiplying numbers not close to one hundred

  1. Write Your Problem Down. Write down your numbers sitting on top of each other, like you would do when multiplying normally.

  2. Multiply. Multiply the numbers in the ones place and put the product directly under the ones.

  3. Cross Multiply. Cross multiply like you would for fractions by taking the top number's tens digit multiplied by the bottom numbers ones place. Then take the top number's ones place multiplied by the bottom number's tens place.

  4. Add the products from the previous step. Add the two products and place the answer to the left of the ones place's answer.

  5. Multiply Again. Multiply the numbers in the tens place and place the answer to the left of the previous step's answer.

Numbers not close to one hundred where products are 10 or more

  1. Write your problem down in the same manner as above.

  2. Multiply the numbers in the ones place and put the product underneath the problem as shown. In this case, 6*4 is greater than 10 (24).

  3. Cross Multiply. Just as above, cross-multiply the ones with the opposing tens and add them together. In this case, (2*4) + (6*1) = 14. Write 14 underneath 24 one space to the left (ending on the tens column) If you're struggling with keeping the numbers in the right spot, you can put 1 zero before your cross multiplication product.

  4. Multiply the tens. Multiply the tens. 2*1 = 2. Place this product another space to the left, in the hundreds column as shown. Again, you can also put two zeros before it to help you keep the numbers at the correct place value.

  5. Add the products. Add the three rows as you would in a normal multiplication method. The sum of the three rows you created equal 364, our answer.

Numbers closer to one hundred

  1. Write Your Problem Down. Write down your numbers sitting on top of each other, like you would do when multiplying normally.

  2. Subtract Both Numbers by a Hundred. Subtract both numbers and place the differences beside the numbers you subtracted.

  3. Multiply.' Multiply the two differences you got in the previous step and place the product in the first two places ( ones and tens)

  4. Subtract. Subtract one of the two factors by the opposite number's answer in step two.

  5. Get your answer. Place the answer from step four to the left of the number you got in step three.

  6. Keep in mind that this method is optional! This alternative method is a bit easier, since adding together large products like 8*8 and 9*7 isn't very easy. If you don't feel like learning an additional method, you can use the ones above instead.


Tips

  • If you have 1 number close to 100 and the other one farther from 100, use the numbers not close to one hundred where products are 10 or more method.
  • Keep in mind that these methods only work for numbers under a hundred.
