Overcome Television Addiction

In recent times, television addiction has become a norm, especially amount the younger teenage school children and most adults who have retired or people with too much leisure time. Watching excessive TV can create a major health hazard for any individual. As a result, one accumulates calories, indulges in food binging, has a general lack of physical and mental stimulation, and there are countless other negatives attached to watching too much TV. Watching TV in moderation is healthy, but too much viewing is not good for you. Here are some ways in which one can constructively keep busy or help their kids overcome or break away from the bad habit of excessive viewing.

Steps

  1. Avoid becoming a social recluse. Watching too much television dampens your socializing skills and many people start to experience difficulty in trying to communicate properly. It is by far easier for TV addicts to lose themselves into a movie, sitcom, etc. This is a convenient, but also wasted, way to get through life in general.
  2. Attend to chores that have been neglected. Take a good look around you and attend to unfinished or prospective household duties that may need to be taken care of. This can include anything from fixing a leaking tap to fixing up the garden. Improving your cooking or cuisine skills is also another option to consider.
  3. Improve your creative and technical skills. Everyone is creative in some sort of way. One just needs to tap into and discover these creative abilities and help themselves to polish these talents. Seek advice or ideas from hobbies and craft magazines, media sections etc. This will also be a great way to help you discover yourself.
  4. Register for additional part time courses, degrees, diplomas, etc. This will make a great and significant demand on your time. This will also keep you fruitfully occupied and mentally stimulated.
  5. Try being bold. Study or learning something new to invigorate and stimulate your senses. You will learn to become disciplined and to develop a sense of self restraint.
  6. Encourage conversation and interaction within the family. Get involved in the lives of your children, parents, siblings and other members of your immediate family. Involvement means contributing positively by displaying genuine care and concern without causing undue stress or conflict within the family.
  7. Always remember that being bored is a choice we make. We choose to be bored. Like other choices that you make in life, you change this mode of boredom by occupying yourself adequately with the many interesting options that life has to offer you. Discover yourself, the things you like, what is it that you don't like? etc.
  8. Enforce strict control over your children's television time. Just enough time should be allocated for television viewing. Make time for other important aspects of development such as completing their homework, school projects, reading time, dinner time, playing time, computer times, etc.
  9. Take charge of your own life. Do not let the television take charge of your life. Many people work or change their schedules around movie times, sitcom series etc. If this is the current state of affairs in your life, take a moment to realize how much influence the television has on you as a person.
  10. Always remember that it is never too late to correct and make the change. Even as a retired adult, one still has the ability and capability of being usefully occupied with activities that can mentally and physically stimulate you. As a result, you will help yourself contribute to your own well being.
