Paint a Barn Quilt
This is a comprehensive guide to the step by step procedure in the painting of a barn quilt. A list of materials, instructions, and picture diagrams will be provided for assistance.
Steps
- Gather the things you'll need, listed below.
- Align the (4) Pressure Treated 2x4's to the plywood along the edges so that they become the framing and fasten them with the (8) wood screws and drill.
- Apply the White Exterior Primer to the plywood with the paint roller and allow to dry (Four coats of primer total).
- Use a measuring tape and straight edge to draw pencil lines across the painted top in 1'x 1' squares. Then use the straight edge to draw the appropriate diagonals across the squares for this particular design.
- Starting from the center of the plywood, apply painters tape to edges of pencil lines. Use the razor/box cutter for accurate points toward the center.
- Paint the inside portion of the tape with a color of Exterior Latex Paint using a clean paint roller. Allow to dry and repaint (this should be done four times).
- To stop color bleeding under the tape, paint a thin line along the edge of the tape using the same color as that below the tape. Any color that leaks under the tape will match the color that is there. (Always paint your lightest colors first.)
- The next several steps will follow the same premises as the last. Apply the painters tape carefully, remember to only do one color at a time. Patience is important in allowing each color to dry before moving onto the next. Use clean paint rollers.
- Begin to tape the entire perimeter so that the trim of the framing can now be painted. Also take the opportunity to tape and correct any "accidents" so that it can be repainted.
- Remove the tape and view your new Barn Quilt! Hang on a barn, house, or building.
Tips
- Give the paint plenty of time to dry between each coat of paint.
- Apply enough pressure to the painters tape on the plywood so that no paint can seep through.
- Don't rush. If you push the paint roller too fast, paint will likely drip off and onto other surfaces of your painting.
- Most importantly- be creative and have fun!
