Play Game Boy Advance Games on Your Computer

Have you ever thought how great it would be to play Game Boy Advance (GBA) games (or games for earlier models) on almost any computer? You can do so by following these simple steps.

Steps

  1. Download a GBA emulator such as VisualBoyAdvance or No$gba. Typically the download is a .zip file, which requires you to extract the files before running the emulator, rather than an installation program.
  2. Use a search engine to search for the Game Boy game title you want to play followed by "roms". Download the ROM. Although the actual ROM file's name will end in .gb, .gbc, or .gba, depending on which Game Boy model the game is for, it may be contained in a .zip or .rar file and need to be extracted.
  3. Open the emulator and select the game you just downloaded. The game should load and you are ready to play!

Tips

  • Some sites require you to make an account. For these occurrences it is better to make an account. Usually the download time will be faster and the risk of viruses will be much lower.
  • Look at your emulator's control settings to determine which keyboard keys correspond to the buttons on a real Game Boy Advance. You can change these if you want.
  • Sites such as PDRoms offer free, legal GBA games that hobbyists have created. You can use these to try out your emulator without infringing copyright.
  • 7-Zip is a free software program that can decompress .zip and .rar files. After installing it, you can right-click either type of file and choose 7-Zip → Open archive, allowing you to drag the files to the Desktop to extract them.

Warnings

  • Keep in mind that it is generally illegal to download a game that has been sold commercially, regardless of how long you keep it for. This is especially true if you don't already own a copy.
  • Be cautious when downloading files. They may contain viruses, and it is always wise to use antivirus software.
  • Always remember to download games from a trusted website or sever certificate
