Play Guitar Like Joe Satriani
Joe Satriani is considered one of the most accomplished technical guitarists in the world. His career began as a session musician and teacher, and then he began to release his own albums, including "Surfing with the Alien," an instrumental album that principally exposed the artist's wide range of technique to the public. Satriani is considered such an accomplished musician that his fan base includes a great many other musicians, so much so that he has licensed his name to a variety of musical instruments which he religiously uses.
Steps
- Consider purchasing a Joe Satriani endorsed guitar from Ibanez (link below). The JS series guitars are both used and endorsed by Satriani, and most likely to produce his signature sound as they sport Edge Pro, which is Ibanez's exclusive tremolo system. They also have slightly unusually placed pickups.
- Buy Satriani's favorite effects pedals including:
- The Vox JS Big Bad Wah
- The Digitech Whammy
- The Vox Satchurator
- The Full-tone Ultimate Octave
- The Electro-Harmonix POG (Polyphonic Octave Generator)
- Listen to as much Satriani and those that inspired him, principally Jimi Hendrix, as possible.
- Understand the Satriani' techniques. Satriani has developed special techniques that allow him to play fast and precise. These include, but are not limited to:
- Two-handed tapping
- Sweep-picking
- Volume swells
- Harmonics
- Extreme whammy bar effects.
- Understand the Pitch Axis Theory.
- Practice scales using Satriani's own technique: linear scales. Instead of practicing his scales in positions he practices his scales one string at a time. This technique is partly what gives his solos their distinctive sound.
- Learn to speed up. Satriani achieves his speed through hammer-ons and pull-offs.
Tips
- Practice as often as you can.
- Find a guitar teacher who is familiar with Satriani's techniques.
- Take it slow at first and gradually increase your speed.
- Learn the fundamentals before the advanced techniques.
Warnings
- No matter how hard you practice you may not reach the levels of Joe Satriani in ten years time but be not discouraged, you will still be a lot better than you were before.
