Play a C Chord on the Piano

A C Chord, simple but effective. C is probably the easiest major scale to play on a piano/keyboard. The chord is very easy as well. This article will tell you how to play the C Major, Minor and dominant 7.

Steps

  1. Learn your C scale. Put your thumb over the C note (the white key before the two blacks) and then play each white key with your thumb to your middle finger. Then cross your thumb underneath your middle finger to the next white key, and after that use the rest of your fingers to play the rest of the white keys. Then from your pinky to your thumb, go back down the piano. When you reach your thumb, cross your middle finger over to the next key and then play back down from there to your thumb. Try this a couple of times until you get it right.
  2. Now try playing a C Chord. Put your thumb on C, your middle finger on E and your pinky on G. Press down all of them together. What you got? A C Chord!
  3. Now let's play a C Minor Chord! Not much different then a major C, but your middle finger is on E flat. So try that!
  4. Now let's try a dominant C chord. All you do is put your thumb on C, your forefinger on E, your middle finger on G and your third finger on B flat. C dominant!
  5. And there you have it! Mess around with the chords and use your other hand to do little solos or bass notes!

Tips

  • Toffee apple rule:
    • Apple Hands: When you play, keep your hands up like you're holding an apple.
    • Sticky Fingers: Don't take your hands off the top of the keys when you don't play them. It may make it easier.
    • These tips are optional, but if you find it stresses you, play in a way you're comfortable.
  • Sit up straight when playing the piano.

Warnings

  • Don't strain your hands to reach notes, as it may hurt later on.
  • Try not to slam the keys down to hard, as it may result in injury.
