Practicing for Picture Day
- Take care of your face the week before. Clean your face every night, and if you have a foolproof method that prevents acne for you, follow it. We're aiming for a clean, clear, beautiful face!
- Plan out your outfit! Don’t wake up on the morning of picture day and just grab whatever is clean! Plan a great outfit that matches your skin tone, hair color, eye color and really flatters your shape. Make sure that the pattern on your top doesn't have any writing on it and the pattern isn't too crazy. If the pattern is slightly too busy, then it will take all of the attention away from your gorgeous face. Solid colors are generally the best choice.
- Rehearse your pose and smile. Do you want to smile with your mouth open, or closed? How do you want your eyes to look? Would you like your eyes to be looking straight into the camera which will give the person who is examining the picture a feeling that you are staring at them or do you want to look more far off into a corner, which gives off a much more sophisticated look. One day prior to the picture day, go in front of the mirror and practice some nice smiles. Try to have a natural smile. Think of things that make you really smile e.g. your favorite joke, or something that your friend said to you that made you laugh or smile.
- Practice your makeup. Make sure you have all of your colors right and know what amounts are right for you. Ask family and friends if they like this look and if it goes with your outfit. Also, time yourself and see how long it takes you to apply everything so in the morning you know how long you need to get ready and picture perfect. Don't forget to add an extra five minutes in case you make a mistake.
Getting Ready on Picture Day
- Get lots of rest the night before. You don't want to remember your year by having dark circles under your eyes.
- Get up a little early the morning of picture day. Wake up nice and early so you have plenty of time to get ready. If you have to rush, you won't feel as confident when it's time to get your picture taken.
- Take a nice shower and do your hair and makeup. Being clean will help you look and feel your best in front of the camera.
- Comb and brush your hair. At the very least, comb it so it looks neat and nice. If you want, straighten, curl, or scrunch your hair to make it look a little more special, part your hair to the opposite side. So if you like it on the left, put it to the right the way, so when they take the picture it looks like you parted it to the left. ( The camera tends to have a mirror effect and makes your hair look like you parted it a different way)
- Wash your face with face wash and apply your make-up if desired.
- Apply some deodorant. Although most school pictures cut off just below your shoulders, you don't want sweat stains to be seen in the picture.
- Change into your picture day outfit. Put on the clothes you picked out (or your uniform), and be sure that they are neat and ironed.
- Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly. After you've eaten your breakfast, make sure to brush and floss your teeth so you have a bright smile. Also, make sure that you don't have any food stuck in your teeth!
- Bring a small mirror to school. Before the picture make sure your hair is nice and that your teeth are clean.
- Pose for the picture. Just relax and give the smile you've practiced in the last day in front of the mirror and then take your picture!
- Think of something that makes you truly happy while you wait for the photographer.
- When it comes time for your picture, sit up straight. Stretch your neck up and lower your chin slightly.
Tips
- Be confident with yourself. Don't say you look bad, because that just lowers your self esteem, smile and be happy with yourself.
- Find out which color the background is, that way you will know not to wear that color. You don't want to be a floating head.
- Compare school pictures from previous years to know what you can do to look your best the next time.
- If you have a digital camera, try taking pictures of yourself before you get your real picture. Then you can see your picture in the playback mode and you know what you can correct ahead of time to make it better.
- Light colored shirts are not usually the best choice on picture day. Choose a darker tone and try to find a shirt that frames your face nicely (i.e. a v-neck or scoop neck, or whatever looks best on you). But white can make you look very tan and matches whatever background color there may be.
- Have a natural smile.
- Make sure your clothes are clean.
- Try practicing your smile in front of a mirror. It's sort of like rehearsing!
- just relax and think of happy memories that make you smile.
- While taking your picture think of something funny. Before you go to take your picture ask your teacher if you can go to the bathroom to look in the mirror to see how you look.
- If your bra shows, wear a sweater.
Warnings
- Be sure to have a natural smile. If it is forced, the result of the picture may not be as you would like. If you are not a good natural smiler, think of something funny or someone you like!
- Don't make your school picture like a Facebook picture: no revealing clothes, and definitely no pouting. Smile!
- Don't wear the wackiest thing you have to try to stand out. The Hawaiian shirt, fake red plastic flower in your hair, and grass skirt your parents brought back from Hawaii are going to look awfully silly in the class picture. It's best to keep your outfit plain and simple - concentrate more on your face, shoulders and neck.
