Prevent Further Injury After Accidents
The worst thing you can do after getting into an accident is to make your injury worse. Below are a few practical tips to avoid further injury after an accident.
Steps
- Get an accurate diagnosis. One of the most common reasons we can further injure ourselves after accidents is not knowing the extent of our injury. By knowing what type of injury you have, it is easier to find the steps in caring for yourself and avoiding more harm.
- Get early treatment. Another reason that people add injury to themselves is waiting too long to get treatment, as with any other health problem, the earlier we treat the problem, the less we have to worry about.
- Avoid too much physical strain. Do not overexert yourself when you are injured and make sure that physical activity or exercises you are doing after injury have been approved by your physician or therapist.
- Get help. We all need help, especially when we are injured, it is best to have someone around ready to help you out to do some chores, errands or even just to reach for something that may cause strain for you to do yourself. Do not hesitate to ask friends and family for help.
- Make sure your house is safe and things are easily accessible. Eliminate things that can cause you to fall or slip such as clutter on the floor. Install railings inside your bathrooms and for stairs and steps. These may seem like a hassle but falling on an injury can be very damaging.
- Listen to your doctor. This may seem clichéd and obvious, but a lot of people do the opposite of what their doctors tell them. If your doctor says to wait before you resume working out or playing a certain sport for a specific amount of time, follow it. Doctors are there to help you get better but only if you are willing to do your part in caring for yourself.
- Relax. Wounds and injuries take time to heal. There is no need to rush back to work if all you will cause on yourself is further injury. Better to miss a few extra days of work than to permanently damage your body.
