Print DVD Labels

Adding custom labels to your burnable DVDs can help you to identify each disc and show them off to others. Label software allows you to design labels in a variety of colors, shapes, and designs. The guide below describes how to design a label on your computer, print it off, and apply it to your DVD.

Steps

  1. Install print label software on your computer. You can shop around to decide which program suits your needs the best. Brands such as Avery, Memorex, and Roxio come bundled with a design program and labels to print on.
  2. Design your label. Consider the size and placement of backgrounds, text, and graphics. Also, think about how complex or simple you want your label to be. You can customize your label on a template that comes with your software. This way you can preview how the label will look before you print it.
  3. Print your label. DVD labels are produced on special adhesive paper that may or may or not come bundled with the labeling software. You can purchase additional packs of adhesive label paper separately, in either matte or glossy finishes.
  4. Peel the label from its backing.
  5. Place the label on your blank DVD. Press it down firmly and evenly to avoid wrinkles. Make sure to align the label properly so that it doesn't hang off the edge of the disc.
    • Some labeling bundles come with a tool to help apply labels. These tools usually consist of a base with a peg on top which holds the disc in place.

Tips

  • CD label printers are available for printing directly to DVDs and CDs. They print out the label you have designed on your computer and automatically apply it to an inserted disc. These printers offer accurate alignment and firm placement of disc labels.
  • Remember to use disc cases to protect your DVDs. These will prevent damage to both the disc and the label. You can also use cases as a base for pressing labels on to your DVDs.
  • You can write directly on DVDs to label them. Many burnable DVDs come with blank lines that can be filled in using a permanent marker. Markers should be soft-tipped.

Warnings

  • Printing labels can drain ink cartridges quickly. Have extras on hand just in case.
  • Labels applied to DVDs manually can come off due to excessive heat and general wear.
