Quote on Reddit

Reddit is an online forum/social network where users engage in discussions, share and comment on all manner of media and websites of interest. Those items that receive more attention ascend in the rankings. When you comment on a post, you can choose to "quote," that is, enter text taken from another source. The quote will be set apart from the rest of your comment. Adding quotes can help liven up a discussion, and lend your own comments an air of legitimacy.

Steps

  1. Log into your Reddit account. After you login you can comment on posts and share your own posts.
    • Note: If you do not already have one, it is very easy to create an account. All you need is an e-mail address. You can adjust your e-mail settings if you do not wish to receive e-mails from Reddit.
  2. If a post interests you, you can join in the discussion by clicking on "comments". Clicking on the title of the post takes you to the post itself.
  3. If you know of another relevant article or post that can contribute to the discussion, copy the text from the article or post that you wish to quote.
  4. Give it context. In your Reddit text box, briefly state your point of view, before or after your quote. If your quote is a person of authority, you may wish to introduce them to other readers in order to give your quote some weight.
  5. Paste the quote text into your Reddit text box, before or after your own writing.
  6. Place the ">" symbol before the quote. Text that you enter before or after your quote will be removed from the rest of your comment by an indent and solid vertical line. If you want to further inset your quote add a second ">". To add your reply to the quote, hit enter twice (leaving a blank line between the quote and your reply) and type your response. Otherwise, your response will be embedded within the quote.
  7. Save it. Click "Save," and you're done! Check back later to see if anyone responds to your comment.

Tips

  • Stay true to the forum's discussion topic and be respectful of other users, or else you will lose credibility.
  • Be sure to attribute your quote. Include a url, the individual's name and their title (if relevant).
  • If you have a blog, you may be able to get more viewers by posting comments from your own work.

Warnings

  • Do not misquote others or make up quotes. If anybody catches you they will discount your argument, and may even take action against you!
