Read Rubik's Cube Letters

Many people become confused when they read Rubik's Cube notation. A long algorithm like R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R F' R can seem very intimidating. The following article should shed light on this.

Steps

  1. Hold the Rubik's Cube so one side is facing you. Each face on a Rubik's Cube is represented by a letter. In the photo above, the orange side would be facing you because it is "F". If the white side was facing you, it now would be the "F" side. The side facing you is the front side and represented by an F. The side facing up to the sky, is the "upwards side" and is represented by a U and so on.
    • front = F
    • back = B
    • right = R
    • left = L
    • up = U
    • down = D
  2. Work out how to turn each side. A side can be turned in 3 ways, clockwise, anticlockwise and 180 degrees. You work out which way is clockwise/anticlockwise by imagining that the face in question is facing you. This means that the back face seems to behave in the opposite manner the the front side. This will take some getting used to.
    • To represent a clockwise turn the letter is left how it is, so R means turn the right face clockwise.
    • To represent a anticlockwise turn an apostrophe is placed after the letter, so R' (pronounced R prime)means turn the right face anticlockwise.
    • To represent a 180 degree turn a "2" is placed after the letter, so R2 means turn the right face 180 degrees.
