Remove Petroleum Jelly from Hair Using Olive Oil and Detergent

Not only can inquisitive children get petroleum jelly stuck in their hair, so can adults--especially when they try to use hair products with petroleum jelly (also known as petrolatum or Vaseline), as their base, or when they have been using Vaseline to try to get rid of lice. Removing petroleum jelly from hair can seem really difficult--almost impossible--as it doesn't wash out with shampoo, and other remedies (e.g., corn starch and washing, rubbing it out with a towel) can take a lot of time. Before you attempt to cut all the grease out, try these simple steps.

Steps

  1. Soak your hair completely in olive oil.
  2. Scrub the olive oil into your hair with your hands.
  3. Apply dish-washing liquid; it should cover your hair. Don't use dishwasher type, use the kind for manual washing.
  4. Scrub the dish-washing liquid into your hair.
  5. Wash your hair out completely.
  6. Apply conditioner to your hair if you like.
  7. Enjoy your petroleum-jelly-free hair.

Tips

  • Although it is uncertain whether certain types of olive oil or dish washing liquid work better than others, one contributor used Filippo Berio Extra Light Tasting Olive Oil--Frying & Roasting and Palmolive Ultra Concentrated Dish Liquid with great success.

Warnings

  • You really should not use dishwasher soap.
  • Do not use dish detergent formulated for use in dishwashers.
  • Use the manual wash dish-washing soap, not the dishwasher soap.
  • Avoid getting the olive oil or dish-washing liquid in the eyes.
