Repair a Crochet Blanket

So, you've got a lovely crochet blanket from Grandma that is coming undone? Here are a few tips to help you get that keepsake blanket back into usable condition.

Steps

  1. Learn to crochet, if you do not already know how.
  2. Obtain matching yarn. It will need to match in both color and weight.
  3. Obtain a crochet hook in a suitable size for your yarn.
  4. Determine how your crocheted blanket unraveled. Was it along a single crocheted seam? Torn in the middle? Unravels are easier to fix than tears!

Fixing Unravels

  1. Pull the original yarn, if it is still attached, until you have a loose loop and then re-crochet the unraveled section, taking care to secure the end of the yarn when finished.
  2. If you are unable to find an "end loop" or if your unraveled yarn is missing, tie on your replacement yarn in an inconspicuous spot and re-crochet the missing area.

Fixing Tears

  1. Apply FrayCheck (or similar) fabric glue to the raw edges of the tear to prevent further raveling.
  2. Sew the torn edges together using matching yarn, carefully crisscrossing the area.
  3. Sew well into the surrounding area to ensure that your "patch" will not rip further with use.

Tips

  • Since crochet can tear and unravel in multiple ways, you will have to use your ingenuity and best judgment to decide which repair method is more appropriate for your situation.

Things You'll Need

  • Matching yarn
  • Appropriately sized crochet needle
  • Large eyed needle for sewing.
  • FrayCheck fabric stabilizer (kind of glue)
