Replace a Ceiling Fan Capacitor

Are you having problems with your ceiling fan? If your fan is running slowly on all speeds, certain speeds are slow or do not work, or you are having a humming sound coming from your motor and the fan won't turn well, then you may need to replace the capacitor on your ceiling fan.

Steps

  1. Turn off the power to the ceiling fan from the circuit breaker panel in your home.
  2. Open up the ceiling fan housing using screwdrivers, generally a star or Phillips head
  3. Unhook the wires to the capacitor, paying careful attention which wires plug into where. You may also consider drawing a quick wiring diagram on paper to make hooking up the new capacitor easier.
  4. Hook up the new capacitor in place of the old one.
  5. If you have wiring difficulties, use our wiring guide to distinguish which wiring colors go where.
  6. You will need to use a replacement capacitor which matches the same values in terms of impedance and voltage in the circuit.
  7. Check with the manufacturer first before buying a replacement capacitor to determine if they have an exact match or not. If not you may need to purchase a third party capacitor
