Set up a Network Homegroup

One of the features that come standard with Windows 7 is the capability to share documents, images, videos, and music over a home network. HomeGroup is relatively easy to set up and can be useful when working with multiple computers.

Steps

  1. Select a computer to start the HomeGroup on. It must have a functional Internet connection if you want to create it.
  2. Open 'Control Panel' and select 'Network and Internet'. A list of networking-related links will appear.
  3. Click the 'HomeGroup' link. A page will open saying that there is no HomeGroup on your network (assuming that there is none).
  4. Click 'Create a HomeGroup'. You will be brought to another page with a series of checkboxes on it.
  5. Select the libraries/folders you want to share over the HomeGroup. When complete, the folders you select will be visible and accessible to other computers connected to your HomeGroup.
  6. Click 'Next'. You may click the 'Back' arrow if you want to change the shared folders. You can also change them after you finish.
  7. Copy down the password that appears. You will need it if you wish to connect other computers to the HomeGroup.
  8. Click 'Save Changes' and finish your settings. Your HomeGroup is now on your home network.
