Shampoo and Condition Your Hair

As easy as this task may seem, many people wash their hair incorrectly. This article will hopefully explain the right way to get a shining, clean mane.

Steps

  1. Gather shampoo, conditioner, and a comb.
  2. Brush the hair before entering the shower to avoid tangling.
  3. Soak the hair completely with warm water. Wet the hair as much as possible for at least thirty seconds.
  4. Put a small amount of shampoo onto the palm of your hand. The amount of shampoo will vary with hair length and texture; a good estimate is about the size of a dollar/pound coin.
  5. Massage the shampoo into the scalp with your fingertips, not nails. Concentrate on the top of the head. Shampoo the roots and condition the ends.
  6. Rinse the hair with warm water. Rinse all of the shampoo out before moving on.
  7. Put a small amount of conditioner onto the palm of your hand. Start at the nape of the neck and comb the conditioner through with your fingers, until you have reached the tips of the hair.
  8. Let the conditioner sit for about two to three minutes. Only let it sit for two to three minutes if the brand of shampoo instructs you to do so. Check and make sure it isn't leave in conditioner which you don't have to rinse out at all. Comb the hair while waiting to spread it out more evenly.
  9. Rinse the hair with warm water until all of the conditioner is washed out.
  10. Finish with a blast of cold water to close off the cuticles and give the hair a little extra shine.
  11. Blot the hair dry with a towel. Do not squeeze the hair.
  12. Let the hair air-dry. It's healthier, since blow drying can dry it out and cause frizz.

Tips

  • Scrub with a fair amount of pressure to ensure your roots are being cleaned properly.
  • Listening to the radio while in the shower will make it much more relaxing and fun. Be careful to keep the radio or any electronic device dry.

Warnings

  • Rinse thoroughly, or else the hair will look and feel greasy.
  • Never brush hair when wet. This causes breakage and damage. Combing is recommended. Use a wide toothed comb to untangle any knots you find when your hair is wet.
  • Piling hair on top of the head while shampooing will cause tangling. Be gentle.
