Start an Internet Meme

A meme is an idea, a saying, an action, etc. that people do that travels across generations just like the genes in DNA. Starting a new internet meme is generally a long and depressing process of rejection, but if you've got something good that takes on fast enough, you're set to create a good meme.

Steps

  1. Have an idea. Be inspired by other memes. For example, "i think x is a pretty cool guy, eh y's and doesn't afraid of anything" was started by a poorly written 4chan thread.[1] Basically, you're looking for a phrase like "so I herd you like mudkipz" or "this is not my lol face."
    • For example, you can generally get ideas from sources by watching old episodes of Pokémon, Power Rangers, etc. - generally things people won't admit to watching anymore.
    • Not all memes are copypasta. In fact, many memes exist as image macros - such as Lolcats, which are image macros of cats.
  2. Find a picture that reflects what you want to imply. Just enter words into Google images until you find something that matches up. If you can't find anything, try changing the phrase or give up on that idea and get a new one.
    • Be careful, as a lot of images on the internet are copyrighted. Be sure to obey copyright laws and have your work fall under Determine Copyright Fair Use.
  3. Now this is where the skill comes in. Many memes start on 4chan. However, 4chan is for ages 18 and up, so you may have to go onto another site like it, or onto a forum. You need to post it where it can get a lot of attention and views. A good subtle approach could be to relevantly slip it in a few of your posts on an internet forum that you're a regular on.

Tips

  • It pays to have a thick skin to handle rejection.
  • Be nice about them, because you don't want to hurt people's feelings.

Warnings

  • Creating memes can be addictive, so time yourself before starting the meme.
  • Know when to stop. Not every meme catches on.
  • Avoid trolling. As commonplace as it's become on the internet these days, it could be considered Handle Cyber Bullying in some cases.
