Stop Lipstick from Feathering

Feathered lips are a disaster to look at, with the lipstick bleeding across your lips and looking uneven. It becomes more of a problem the older you are, as your lips dry up more easily and lines around your mouth show up more easily. Stop the feathering with this simple method.

Steps

  1. Exfoliate your lips if needed. Dry lips will make lipstick color uneven and mottled. Use a soft toothbrush to clean the lips first.
  2. Pat your lips with foundation primer first. Be sure to cover all parts of your lips evenly. Then apply a little foundation over the primer.
  3. Apply a lip balm to moisturize the lips. This step is optional but is helpful if your lips tend to be very dry; the balm helps the lipstick to glide on.
  4. Apply the lipstick. Do this under bright, good light, so that you can see what you're doing properly.
  5. Finish by patting over the lipstick with a translucent powder. The combination of foundation, balm, and powder will prevent the lipstick from feathering.
  6. Finished.

Tips

  • Filling in your lips with the liner as the long-lasting base can also help to prevent feathering. It also stops a "ring" of liner forming around your lips as the day or night wears on.
  • When applying the lip liner, be sure to use a properly sharpened lip-liner pencil. Then, dab the tip of the liner on your hand to soften it a little before applying.
