Straighten Your Own Hair with a Chemical Straightener

Want to straighten your hair? Try this method for Nubian hair.

Steps

  1. Use a petroleum based product, hair grease, Vaseline, etc, then part your hair and put it on the scalp, at the nape of neck, along hairline, behind ears and forehead. This will protect your scalp and hairline from getting burned.
  2. Follow directions on slip of paper for the specific brand of relaxer that you have. Make sure to put on gloves and mix contents of activator and relaxer creme.
  3. Part hair in small sections and apply relaxer to new growth only; do not get on scalp! Use a comb or a relaxer brush for this step. Use short strokes of brush to cover only the new growth (The more coarse part of the hair close to the scalp, usually about an area of 1/2 inch long). Make sure not to overlap or reapply relaxer to areas. Work from the nape of neck to the crown of head, and then to the edges of the hairline.
  4. Use the back of a comb or hands to smooth the relaxer (smoothing helps you obtain desired straightness) smooth until you reach the straightness you prefer or until your scalp starts tingling.
  5. Rinse hair, making sure you get all of the relaxer out of the hair.
  6. Shampoo. Relaxers come with special shampoo that ensures that all of the relaxer is washed from the hair, some turn pink and then turn white when there is no trace of relaxer.
  7. Rinse and condition with conditioner of your choice, make sure to use setting lotion for best results, it will keep your hair from getting frizzy.
  8. Blow dry or air dry, apply hair moisturizer, oil, or hair grease and style as usual.
  9. Finished.

Tips

  • Make sure that you choose a relaxer that matches your hair type, for finer hair, use a milder relaxer. For very coarse or resistant hair, use regular or super relaxer types.
  • Make sure to relax every part of the new growth, partial touch-ups are not advised, because they can weaken the hair.

Warnings

  • If you plan or getting a very tight hairstyle (braids, weaves, etc). Allow 2 weeks so the hair can rest, this will avoid breakage.
  • Try to stick with the same brand to avoid hair breakage.(Different brands use different formulas in the relaxer.)
  • Make sure not to leave the relaxer on for too long, it will result in chemicals burns to the scalp.
  • Make sure to wait 4-6 weeks before relaxing hair again
