Take Screenshots With OneNote

Microsoft OneNote's Screen Clipping feature is a quick and easy way to take screenshots. Learn how to use the feature with the following step-by-step instructions.

Steps

Screen Clipping

  1. Open Microsoft OneNote. The startup page has a bar of tabs at the top. Select "Insert" and then "Screen Clipping."
  2. Your previous screen will pop up. The screen will look hazy and cross bars will appear. You can choose to take a screenshot of the entire page or just crop out a section of it. Use the cross bars to enclose the area you want to clip, and then release the mouse.
  3. OneNote will reappear and show the section you just clipped. From there, you can CTRL-V to paste the screenshot into your email or Word document or wherever you plan on using it. You can right-click on the clipping to save it to a different location.
    • Click on the corner of the image to drag and resize it.
    • The image will be stored in OneNote in a side bar in case you need to use it again.

Using a Shortcut to Screen Clipping

  1. You can use the Screen Clipping tool without opening OneNote. Right-click the OneNote icon in the notification area of your taskbar. (If you don't see the OneNote option, follow these instructions to place it there: Tools>Options>Category>Other>Place OneNote icon in the notification area of the taskbar).
  2. Click Create Screen Clipping on the shortcut menu.
  3. Use the Clipping tool as the above instructions #2-3 state.

Using Windows Shortcut Key

  1. Use Win+S key shortcut for Insert Clipping.
  2. Once the screen capture is done, Onenote asks for the location. Create a new note and make it as default and check not to prompt again.
  3. All your captures are copied to this note and also every time it is kept on Clipboard for instance access.

Tips

  • OneNote includes a Screen Clippings shortcut: If you have the program running on your computer, you can press Windows+S to use the Screen Clippings tool without having OneNote open at the same time.
  • Screenshots or images with words can be made searchable. Just right click the image in OneNote and select "Make Text in Image Searchable".

Warnings

  • Screenshots made in OneNote are always saved as PNG files. These can be large in storage size for images containing a larger amount of pixels (they're smaller than other formats for smaller images).
  • In OneNote 2003 there is no right-click menu to save the screen clipping as an image file.
