Theater Hop

Theater hopping is a great way to see multiple movies in a single day and all you need is a little bit of planning and the price of admission to one movie.

Steps

  1. Before proceeding, please realize that movie hopping is grounds for being banned from the theater or escorted out. Very rarely you can be arrested for theft of services (similar to shoplifting).
  2. Choose a large multi-plex, something with a long hallway that has multiple theaters or even better, multiple floors. Be sure it’s a place that has a ticket taker at the main entrance and not in front of the theater doors.
  3. Find the times for the movies online. Be sure to use a site that lists the length of each movie. You can use a movie hopping schedule application called The Movie Hop or TheaterTag.com to plan a movie schedule.
  4. Re-adjust the start times listed by adding 15 minutes, that’s approximately the real start time after all the commercials and trailers have played.
  5. Factor in the actual length of the movie to the newly adjusted start time, that’s when the movie ends.
  6. Take this list to figure out what times are best for certain movies, so that you aren't late!
  7. Go to the matinée on a weekend, the staff will be minimal and the chances that an usher will be watching theater doors will be slim
  8. Purchase the ticket of the most popular movie you’ve chosen to see that day, be sure to buy it for the time you actually expect to see it since that will be the theater most likely watched by ushers.
  9. Have your ticket torn and enter like normal, do not act suspicious and don’t look stressed.
  10. Buy your snacks and (optional) enter the theater of the movie you have scheduled to see and repeat throughout your day, just casually walk in and out of the movies at your schedule times.
  11. Enjoy the day of movies, with proper planning you'll be able to see 3 movies for the price of one.

Tips

  • Don't use the same theater all the time.
  • Go to the restroom between movies, even if you don't have to actually use it, so not to attract attention or be noticed as much. Use different restrooms each time. This gives the illusion to anyone who sees you that a.) after the movie, you're just using the rest room before you leave then b.) you just used the restroom after arriving before going into your movie. Stay out of the lobby as much as possible. Out of sight, out of mind.
  • Try to not buy concessions. You want as little interaction with the staff as possible.
  • Do not theater hop in the middle of movies, this is the most suspicious thing you could do, it’ll attract the attention of ushers since no one else in the lobby.
  • Also try not to buy concessions because they are crazy expensive. Most theaters don't care if you have a backpack or bag. Bring your own food, enough to last through all your movies/as much as you want. Even hot/freshly prepared food can work if you eat it during your first movie.
  • Make sure to write down and bring along the newly created schedule you made that shows what movies you plan to see with the actual start times and end times for each movie
  • Leave the theater with the crowd, nothing stands out more than the individual lurking in the lobby.
  • Some theaters are laid out that the ticket-taker will not let you into the hallway or floor where all the theaters are located until 30 minutes before the showing, if this occurs, purchase the ticket to the first showing on your schedule or try to re-arrange your schedule so that you can see the blockbuster first.
  • Staff changes occur at around 6:00 PM, this is also the longest gap between movies and is the worse time to try to theater hop.
  • Drive in movie theatres are the best for these.
  • It’s better to do this looking like a couple rather than as a lone individual or a pack, people don’t give couples a second glance.
  • If possible, plan your movies to be in theaters close to each other. If your movie times aren't right after each other, jump into a movie nearby even if it's already in the middle or not a movie you want to see. Same thing applies to the rest room tip, it's just a place to waste a little time. Out of sight, out of mind.
  • Wear a jacket (etc) over your clothes. Change during each movie, so the staff won't notice.

Warnings

  • Do not make a scene if you get caught, it's just a game and you already got to see at least one movie. If you leave quietly there's a good chance they won't remember your face, if you make a scene you might as well find a new theater for at least the next 6 months
  • Be sure to buy the ticket of the most popular movie that weekend since that will most likely be the movie you'll be asked to show your ticket for as you enter the theater.

Things You'll Need

  • Money, at least enough to cover the price to one movie (or a free pass. You can get these for giving blood in Los Angeles, CA.)
  • Internet Access to view sites that list show times and the run-time of each movie
