Troubleshoot a Dryer That Smells Like It Is Burning

Is your dryer smelling like it is burning? It's important to troubleshoot the problem as quickly as possible to make sure it isn't going to be a fire hazard.

Steps

  1. Check the lint filter and lint trap. Clean the lint out. Lint filters should be cleaned out after every round of clothes.
  2. Check the base of the dryer. If you have a build-up of lint, dust, fluff, etc., this can create a smell of burning and clothes will come out smelling burned as well. This is more likely with a gas dryer.
  3. Check the exhaust hose. Does it appear clear or blocked?
  4. Check the belt rollers. It is important that they are adequately lubricated.
  5. Get a technician to check the electrics. There can be such problems as wires being burned, or clogging that you simply cannot see.

Warnings

  • If in any doubt, have the dryer checked out and don't use it again until a qualified technician has done so.
