Turn an Afro into Straight Hair
How do you turn an afro into straight hair? Read the following steps to learn how. Results vary.
Steps
- Get a really good shampoo product. Make sure it does not have any constituents ending with -cone. Simethicone and Dimethicone have been known to dry out Afro hair, so avoid them.
- Wash your hair. Scrub your hair with your hands in the shower until clean.
- Use conditioner of your choice. It's best to leave the conditioner on for at least 15 minutes so that it penetrates the hair shaft. Place a plastic cap over your hair to promote penetration into the shaft.
- Rub clear aloe vera lotion into your hair. When you get out of the shower, apply the aloe vera. Use a handful, as afro hair is pretty thick. Comb your hair until it is nice, sleek, and tangle-free.
- Put your hair in a few ponytails or plaits. Wait for it to dry completely. Usually it will dry overnight.
- At this point, your hair won't be completely straight, but will be less kinky.
- For even straighter hair, try rolling lightly oiled hair taut with very large rollers. The results are best if you sit under a hooded dryer for 20 minutes.
- You can also try using a flat iron to make your hair straighter. Read the instructions that come with the hair iron so you don't burn or damage your hair.
Tips
- If nothing else works, go to a hairstylist. You'll get professional hair straightening without a lot of mess and hard work.
- You might also try keratin or frizz reduction hair products.
- Don't straighten everything at once. Separate the hair into different parts and take your time straightening it.
