Use Calibre to Download Books to Your Kobo Reader

Calibre is an open source software program that allows you to manage your e-book library on many devices. Here is how you can get up and running using Calibre with your Kobo reader. This is helpful if you are having problems transferring books to your device with the Kobo Desktop Edition software.

Steps

  1. Connect your Kobo reader to your computer
  2. Download and install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE)
  3. Create an account on Adobe or log in with your existing account
  4. ADE should detect a "Mobile device" and prompt you to "Authorize" it. Do this.
  5. Log in to your account on Kobo, and download the EPUB version of the books you want to transfer to your Kobo reader.
  6. Double click and open the acsm file that you downloaded for each of your books, this will open and download them to your ADE.
  7. Your EPUB books will now reside in your "Digital Editions" folder, on a Mac this is located in your "Documents" directory.
  8. Open up Calibre, it should detect that your Kobo reader (at the bottom it will say "Connected Kobo Reader")
  9. Click the top left icon and select "Add books from a single directory" and select your "Digital Editions" folder.
  10. Select the book in Calibre and click the icon at the top of the screen that looks like a blue e-book reader, and select "Send to Main Memory"
  11. Calibre's status bar will change to "Sending books to device" and when it has completed the transfer the "On Device" column beside the transferred book will have a check mark.
